Steve Vai Tesserae

Created during the Covid-19 lockdown, this self-initiated project explores the mosaic medium through an entirely digital process. Unlike my digital reconstruction studies of historical mosaics, this piece was created without an existing mosaic as reference.

Using one of my guitar heroes - Steve Vai - as the subject, I developed my own method for constructing and arranging individual digital tesserae, experimenting with their shape, scale, colour and placement to build the image from the ground up. The project became an early study in developing a personal approach to digital mosaic-making.
